- Before You Rank is the first publicly available database of NHS trusts and health boards - built entirely from community contributions by healthcare professionals, students and other NHS workers. It covers EPR systems, documentation methods, prescribing platforms, system integration levels, ED-specific systems, hospital parking and NHS England league position across every NHS trust and health board in the UK.
- All data is community-sourced from healthcare professionals, students and other NHS workers across the UK. Contributors submit information based on their experience working at each trust.
- The data is as accurate as the community makes it. Submissions are checked before they appear, and cross-checked against other sources where possible. EPR systems and digital infrastructure change often, so verify with the trust directly before you rank on it.
- Click the 'Update this trust' button on any trust card, or use the 'Submit an Update' section on the main page. You can correct existing data, add missing information, suggest new trusts, or share community notes about your experience.
- Fully Integrated means notes, prescribing, obs, and results are all in one system. Partially Integrated means some systems are linked but you still switch between platforms. Highly Fragmented means multiple systems with lots of workarounds and poor communication between them.
- Some trusts use a different EPR system in the Emergency Department compared to the wards. When this is the case, the ED system is shown separately in an amber tag so you know what to expect. Mental health and community trusts don't run an Emergency Department, so the ED row is hidden on those cards.
- NHS England grades every English trust into one of four segments each quarter (1 is best, 4 needs intervention), acute trusts in one league and mental health and community trusts in another. Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish trusts aren't assessed, so their position is blank. It is a board-level measure of how a trust is run, not of what it is like to work there: a trust at the top can still be a tough rotation and a Segment 3 trust can still have great teams. Read it alongside the digital systems, the parking and where the hospital is. Each card shows the month the figures we hold were published, and we re-import after every refresh.
- No - you can submit updates completely anonymously. Just click the 'Update this trust' button on any card.
- Each hospital row shows a parking pill: green for free, amber with a cost (e.g. £50/mo) for paid, or grey 'Unknown' if no data yet. Click the chevron to see full details like waiting lists or grade-specific costs. Parking info is community-submitted free text.
- Some cards are marked 'Recommendation' with an 'Affiliate' tag (PAX Scrubs, Foodery meal prep and similar). If you click through and buy, the partner pays us a small fee. It doesn't change the price you pay, we only feature products we use ourselves, and the trust data is never influenced by an affiliate.
- Foundation Ranker 2026 uses Before You Rank data to score rotations based on digital systems preferences. If you are ranking foundation year jobs, Foundation Ranker integrates this data alongside specialty preferences, hospital proximity, and GMC survey ratings into a fully algorithmic ranking tool.
