1. About this policy
This is the cookie policy for the Doctor Devify Hub at tools.doctordevify.com. It covers the hub homepage, every resource we publish under it (Ward on the Street, Foundation Ranker, the Pay Calculator and its Complete resources, the Pay Scales pages, the Payslip Explainer, the Tax Relief Calculator, the NHS staff pay scales, the NHS Staff Pay Calculator, the NHS staff Payslip Explainer, the Rota Compliance Check, Personalised Payslip Check and Automatic Correction Email for NHS staff, and Spec Select), the books at books.doctordevify.com, and the links page at links.doctordevify.com. We don't use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or anything that follows you across other websites.
2. The hub homepage
The hub at tools.doctordevify.com uses browser storage for the following, and nothing else. Each one says what it holds, why, and how long it is kept.
- dd-theme (a cookie and a copy in local storage): remembers whether you chose light or dark mode, so the page does not flash the wrong one. Kept for a year.
- dd-hub-visitor-id (local storage): a random ID so repeat visits count as one person rather than several. Kept until you clear your browser storage, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
- dd-hub-session-id (session storage): a random ID that groups one visit. Gone when you close the tab, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits.
- dd-vid (a cookie): a random ID shared by the hub, Foundation Ranker, the Pay Calculator, NHS Staff Money Resources and Spec Select, so someone who uses more than one of them counts as one person rather than one per resource. It also keeps which way Complete is offered to you the same on every visit. Set on doctordevify.com so it covers the books and links pages too. Kept for 400 days, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
- dd-no-count (a cookie): only if you choose Don't count my visits in section 6, so the hub and Ward on the Street stop counting you. Set on doctordevify.com so it covers the books and links pages too. Kept for 400 days.
- dd-rail (session storage): whether you closed the side menu on a computer, so it stays closed from page to page. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-rail-folded (local storage): which groups you folded away in the side menu on a computer, so they stay folded when you come back. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- dd-rail-promo-closed (session storage): which card at the foot of the side menu you closed, so it stays closed from page to page. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-account-audience (local storage): only once you are signed in, whether the role on your account is a doctor's or another NHS staff member's, so the side menu lists the resources for you in the right order from the moment a page opens. Removed when you sign out.
- dd-splash-shown (session storage): a note that the opening screen has played, so it plays once a visit. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-splash-seen-at (local storage): when the opening screen last played, so it plays at most once a day, even across tabs. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- dd-signed-visit-counted (session storage): only if you are signed in, a note that this visit has been counted, so it counts once. Gone when you close the tab.
- A sign-in token (local storage, set by Supabase): only if you have an account and are signed in. It is what keeps you signed in, and it does identify you.
- dd-wr (a cookie): what you chose about the newsletter popup, so it stops asking. Fourteen days if you closed it, and up to 400 days if you signed up. Set on doctordevify.com so that answering once answers on the resources, the books and the main site.
- dd-wr-seen (a cookie): a note that the newsletter popup has already appeared, so it appears once rather than on every page. Gone when you close your browser.
- dd-on (a cookie): only if you have been given a preview link. Seven days.
- dd_ref (a cookie): only if you arrive through an affiliate's link, or a page address ending in ?ref=. It holds that affiliate's code, so if you buy a paid resource within thirty days the sale is credited to them. It is not essential, it identifies the affiliate and not you, and clearing your cookies removes it. Thirty days. Not set at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6), and choosing it removes one already set.
- dd_campaign (a cookie): only if you arrive through one of our campaign links. It records which campaign brought you, so an account made or a paid resource bought within thirty days can be counted for it. It is not essential, it identifies the campaign and not you, and clearing your cookies removes it. Thirty days. Not set at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6), and choosing it removes one already set.
- Stripe sets its own cookies, but only once you reach a checkout page. Nothing from Stripe is set by browsing the hub.
3. Per-resource cookies and storage
3.1 Before You Rank
Before You Rank has now been brought under Ward on the Street, and its functionality is the same. What it stores is in 3.2.
3.2 Ward on the Street
- street-sent (local storage): how many reviews this browser has sent today, so it stops at the daily limit. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- street-jobs (local storage): a scrambled note of the jobs this browser has reviewed, so it isn't used to review the same job twice. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- street_dt (a cookie): only when you open Compare hospital trusts, so the list of trusts can load; it stops the whole list being downloaded at once. Thirty minutes.
- dd-street-audience (local storage): whether the badge you picked on the front page is resident doctors or one of the other NHS staff groups, so it opens on your choice next time and the side menu lists the resources for you first. Only set when you choose. Choose again to change it, or clear your browser storage to remove it.
- dd-street-staff-group (local storage): the staffing group you chose, such as Nursing, so the search and links take you to its pages. Only set when you choose one. Choose again to change it, or clear your browser storage to remove it.
- dd-street-vote-device (local storage): only if you mark a review helpful or not without signing in, a random number for this browser, so each review takes one vote from it and your thumbs show your vote when you come back. It is not linked to you or your account. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- dd-doctor-money-waitlist-joined and dd-nhs-staff-waitlist-joined (local storage): only if you join the waiting list from a hospital page outside England, that you have, so it thanks you rather than asking again. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- street-prev-path and street-cur-path (session storage): the page you were on before this one, so Back takes you there. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-role-asked (session storage): only if you are signed in, a note that you have been asked your role on this visit, so you aren't asked again until your next one. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-entrance-walked-in (session storage): remembers that you have walked in past the doors on the landing page, so going back takes you to the search. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-entrance-at-search (session storage): that you were at the search on the landing page, so going back to it opens on the search. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-selected-ranker (local storage): the ranker you last chose, so the menu at the top of the page shows that one. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- street-visit (session storage): a random number for this visit, so we can count how the site is used (pages opened, the hospital picked from the search) without knowing who you are. It is not used on the review form or the receipt page. Gone when you close the tab, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
- dd-bleep-thrown (session storage): a note that the bleep has already been thrown in on the landing page, so coming back to the search doesn't throw it again. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-easter-egg-found (local storage): only if you find the landing page's Easter egg while signed out, a note that you found it, so its badge is saved to your account when you sign in. Removed once it is saved, or when you clear your browser storage.
- A sign-in token (local storage, set by Supabase): only if you sign in to vote on or claim a review. It is what keeps you signed in, and it does identify you.
- byr_session_id (session storage): only if you open the form to update a hospital's details, as on Before You Rank, or the newsletter popup appears, so we can count how each is used. Gone when you close the tab, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits.
- No Google Analytics: Ward on the Street doesn't use it, so it sets no Google cookies and shows no cookie banner.
3.3 Foundation Ranker
- Authentication cookies set when you sign in. Essential to keep you logged in.
- Payment cookies set during checkout. Essential to process Complete purchases.
- Once-seen markers (local storage) for the short hints that show you how to drag a rotation, so each plays once rather than on every visit. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- Your ranking in progress (local storage), so a half-finished ranking is still there when you come back. It never leaves your device unless you save it to your account. Kept until you clear it or clear your browser storage.
- fr-landing-session-id (session storage): a random number for this visit, with the time it began, so we can count how the site is used without knowing who you are. Gone when you close the tab, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
- No Google Analytics: Foundation Ranker doesn't use it, so it sets no Google cookies and shows no cookie banner.
3.4 Pay Calculator
- Your calculator inputs saved in your browser, so the figures you entered are still there when you come back or after you sign in. They never leave your device unless you save a scenario to your account.
- Your rotations, rota, payslip lines and career decision figures (local storage) on the Complete resources, so a half-finished analysis is still there when you come back. With Complete the rotations and analyses are also saved to your account; the career decision figures stay in your browser. Cleared when you delete the rotation or clear your browser storage.
- A once-seen marker (local storage) for the short animation that shows how to fill the rota calendar, so it plays once.
- dd-selected-ranker (local storage): the ranker you last chose, so the menu at the top of the page shows that one. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- payslip-mobile-notice (session storage): a note that the tip about reading the Payslip Explainer on a phone has shown, so it shows once a visit. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-pay-pending-checkout (session storage): only if you choose a Doctor Pay Complete plan before signing in, that plan, so checkout carries on once you are signed in. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-pay-welcomed (session storage): the email you paid for Doctor Pay Complete with, kept for the one page reload after you are signed in on your return from checkout, so the page can say you are in. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-estimate-consent (local storage): the date you ticked the estimate statement before seeing a figure, so the calculators ask once. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- A sign-in token if you create a free account, so you stay signed in between visits.
- A theme preference remembering whether you chose light or dark mode.
- dd-pay-visitor-id and dd-pay-session-id (local and session storage): random numbers that group anonymous visits and calculations, so we can see how the calculators are used. Not linked to your identity, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
3.5 Books
- An analytics identifier stored in your browser to group anonymous visit data across book pages. Not linked to your identity.
- Stripe checkout cookies (the ebook): pressing Buy on an ebook takes you to Stripe's own checkout page, which sets its own session and fraud-protection cookies. Set by Stripe, not us. See Stripe's privacy policy.
- Paperback books on Amazon: the buy CTA opens Amazon in a new tab. Any cookies Amazon sets on its own pages are governed by Amazon's policies, not ours.
3.6 NHS Staff Money Resources
- dd-nhs-staff-pay-inputs (local storage): the figures you entered in the NHS Staff Pay Calculator, so they are still there when you come back. When you are signed in they are also saved to your account.
- dd-nhs-staff-pay-inputs-at (local storage): when you last changed those figures, so that when you sign in the newer of this device's figures and your account's is kept.
- dd-tax-inputs (local storage): the figures you entered in the Tax Relief Calculator, so they are still there when you come back.
- dd-tax-income-typed (local storage): whether you typed your own pay into the Tax Relief Calculator, so it stops filling it in from the NHS Staff Pay Calculator.
- dd-shared-figures (local storage): your pay after pension and your band from the NHS Staff Pay Calculator, so the Tax Relief Calculator can fill in your pay. Ignored after 30 days.
- dd-estimate-consent:tax_relief (local storage): the date you ticked the estimate statement before seeing the Tax Relief Calculator's figure, so it asks once.
- dd-nhs-staff-waitlist-joined (local storage): that you joined the waiting list in this browser, so it thanks you rather than asking again.
- dd_staff_waitlist_view_ (session storage): a marker that you have seen the waiting list on a page, so it is counted once a visit. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-estimate-consent:nhs_staff_pay (local storage): the date you ticked the estimate statement before seeing a figure, so the calculator asks once. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- dd-rota-coach-seen (local storage): a once-seen marker for the short animation that shows how to fill the rota calendar, so it plays once.
- dd-nhs-staff-welcomed (session storage): the email you paid for NHS Staff Pay Complete with, kept for the one page reload after you are signed in on your return from checkout, so the page can say you are in. Gone when you close the tab.
- payslip-mobile-notice (session storage): a note that the tip about reading the NHS staff Payslip Explainer on a phone has shown, so it shows once a visit. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd_staff_band_view_ (session storage): a marker that you have seen the NHS Staff Pay Complete offer on a page, so it is counted once a visit. Gone when you close the tab.
- A sign-in token if you create a free account, so you stay signed in between visits.
- dd-pay-visitor-id and dd-pay-session-id (local and session storage): the same random numbers the Pay Calculator uses (3.4), which group anonymous visits so we can see how the resources are used. Not linked to your identity, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
3.7 Spec Select
- dd-ss-visitor-id and dd-ss-session-id (local and session storage): random numbers that group anonymous visits so we can see how Spec Select is used. Not linked to your identity, and not kept at all if you choose Don't count my visits (section 6).
- ss-compare-selection (local storage): the specialties you picked in Compare, so they are still there when you come back. Kept until you clear your browser storage.
- ss-hub-filters, ss-hub-scroll and ss-hub-return (session storage): your search, filters and place in the list of specialties, so going back from a specialty page returns you there. Gone when you close the tab.
- ss-score-draft (session storage): only if you fill in a score calculator before signing in, what you entered, so it is still there when you come back from signing in. Once you are signed in it is saved to your account instead and this copy is removed. Gone when you close the tab.
- dd-schema-waitlist-popup (local storage): when the interview preparation pop-up was last shown and whether you closed it or joined, so it waits a week, or a year once you have joined, before asking again.
- ss-review-prompt and ss-reviewed (local storage): how long you have been reading, when the prompt to review Spec Select was last closed, and whether you have sent a review, so it asks once after a couple of minutes, waits 30 days if you say not now, and never asks again once you have reviewed.
- A sign-in token if you create a free account, so you stay signed in between visits.
- Videos: the tips videos play from Vimeo only when you press play, with Vimeo's do-not-track setting on, so Vimeo sets no tracking cookies.
4. Google Fonts
Our typefaces are served by Google Fonts, which may receive limited technical data (such as your IP address) when fonts load. See Google's Privacy Policy.
5. What we don't use
- No advertising cookies
- No tracking pixels or remarketing tags
- No social-media cookies
- No tracking you across other websites
6. Managing cookies and storage
The hub, its books and links pages, Ward on the Street, Foundation Ranker, the Pay Calculator, NHS Staff Money Resources and Spec Select count how their pages are used: which pages are opened and which buttons are pressed, grouped by the random IDs listed above. The counts stay in our own database, are never shared, and are only used to improve the resources. To stop being counted in this browser, choose Don't count my visits. It also stops the affiliate and campaign cookies above, so a purchase is not credited to a link you followed; an affiliate code you type at checkout still applies. Everything works the same either way.
You can view, block, or clear cookies and browser storage from your browser's settings. Blocking the storage that keeps you signed in, or Stripe's at checkout, will stop sign-in or checkout from working on any resource that has them. Blocking analytics changes nothing about how anything works.
Browser-specific instructions:
None of our resources uses Google Analytics, so none shows a cookie banner. The only counting is our own, described above, and Don't count my visits stops it.
7. Changes
