FAQs

Pay Calculator

What does this calculator work out?

Your monthly and annual take-home as a resident doctor or consultant, in any of the four nations. It works out your pay under your contract (a nodal point with the hours, nights, weekends and on-call on top, or a pay point with your rota's banding supplement), then takes off income tax, National Insurance, pension and any student loan, with LTFT, salary sacrifice, London weighting and flexible pay premia where they apply.

Where do the numbers come from, and how current are they?

Pay scales: the NHS Employers Pay and Conditions Circular (M&D) 1/2026 R2, effective 1 April 2026, which already includes the accepted DDRB award. Flexible Pay Premia and London weighting come from the same circular. Tax bands and student loan thresholds: GOV.UK and HMRC. Pension tiers: NHSBSA. These are the 2026/27 figures, refreshed each April. A fresh pay award or a contract change is flagged on the page until we update.

Interactive Payslip Explainer

Does this check whether I have been paid correctly?

No, and that is the one thing worth knowing before you start. This explains what every line on an NHS payslip means, using a worked example you can point at. It does not read your payslip or compare it with anything. The tool that does that is the Personalised Payslip Check, which reads a real month against the rota you actually worked.

Is this a real payslip?

The layout is. It follows a genuine ESR payslip, down to the short codes payroll prints rather than plain English, so you can recognise your own. The doctor is invented, and every figure is calculated from the same 2026/27 pay scales the calculator uses, so putting their details into the calculator gives the same numbers back.

Rota Compliance Check

What does the rota checker actually check?

Fifteen things, and it names the one that failed rather than just saying "non-compliant": your average week, your hours in any 168, shift length, consecutive long shifts and the rest owed after them, late finishes, consecutive nights and the rest after those, consecutive shifts, weekend frequency, rest between shifts, and four separate on-call rules. It also checks your rota against the work schedule you were given, which is the comparison most people never make.

Where do the rules come from?

From the 2016 terms and conditions, the contract itself rather than a summary of it, and every limit cites the paragraph it comes from. Last checked against the document on 7 September 2026.

the 2016 terms and conditions

Payslip Checker

Do I need a rota, or can I just type in my payslip?

For your salary, yes: it works out what YOUR month should have paid from the shifts you actually worked, then sets your payslip against that. So you build the rotation and paint its rota first, then add a month. Locum shifts need no rota: choose Locum payslips only at the top of the page, set up your shifts and their rates, and paint the days you worked them.

Can it check a locum or bank payslip?

Yes. Choose Locum payslips only at the top of the page, set up each kind of locum shift (a locum day, a locum night) with the rate you were offered, paint the days you worked them, then add the payslip, weekly or monthly. Each line is checked against those shifts, as are the tax, National Insurance, pension and student loan. Your shifts and rates are saved, so later payslips use them.

Tax Relief Calculator

What does this calculator work out?

What HMRC owes you back on the work costs you paid for yourself. Your GMC, NMC or HCPC fee, BMA and royal college subscriptions, defence organisation membership, exams, courses, work mileage, uniform laundry and required working from home. It totals the allowable costs and values them at the rate of tax you actually pay.

Is a tax rebate the same as getting the money back?

No. Relief means you do not pay tax on that part of your income, so you get back the tax you already paid on it, not the whole cost. Spend £481 on your GMC fee as a basic-rate taxpayer and you get roughly £96 back, not £481.
